I started by going to teach a sectional secretly hoping to recruit students.

I got in front of the flute students, and I talked all about how I was always the top flute player at my schools. I listed off all the ensembles I currently played in, and I shared with them that I was going to become an orchestral musician. I told them I even played for Emmanuel Pahud (see that picture up there?). I also played a little Mozart for them. Super impressive, right?  Who WOULDN’T want to study with me?

At the end of my introduction, I still remember what happened…

CRICKETS. BLANK STARES. NO EXCITEMENT.

I was shocked. I was this super fancy flute player who was at this school where no one ever even close to my ability level had visited, and none of the students seemed interested!?

At the end of the sectional, I asked if any students were interested in taking lessons. I told them they should come see me before heading back to class. I also asked the band teacher if she could send any students my way.

And what happened next changed my life…

No one stayed after.
No students contacted me.
I was never asked back to that school.

I remember driving back home and processing everything I did in that sectional.

What was I doing wrong?

I stopped on the way home for some McDonald’s fries and a milkshake to make me feel better. I sucked at recruiting. I tried what I thought other people did to recruit, and it didn’t work.

I felt like I NEVER wanted to teach a sectional, visit a school, or try to recruit again.

I’m SUPER introverted and didn’t like getting up in front of people anyway. I assumed that having a private studio was just not going to be “my thing.”

And then I started watching some awesome elementary, middle, and high school band directors who had programs FULL of eager students. I watched how they interacted with those students and parents.

Eventually, I started believing...

If I could learn this ONE SKILL...

I'd never have a recruiting problem again.

So, I got down off my high horse. I started teaching sectionals and visiting school band programs again.

I tried a second time…
And a third…
And a fourth…

...until I slowly started seeing results and filling up my studio.

Every time I interacted with students, their parents, and school music teachers, I tried something a little different until...

I figured out what people ACTUALLY WANT.

It looked a little like this:

I sent cold emails to school music programs, got on the phone with prospective parents, and stood in front of kids during sectionals. I used the ideas that worked best from months of experimenting.

Over the next few years, I went from ZERO students to a near constant waiting list.

But then, I had to move to Seattle for grad school...

After mastering this skill and working so hard, I was now going to have to start over again FROM SCRATCH. 

No reputation. No connections. No clue about the music culture I was walking into.

I was ready to get a “normal person job” during my grad school years even though I truly just wanted to keep teaching.

I decided that I'd try the same approach I used before moving.

I tried.

I tried again.
